Green peppers, watermelons and cucumbers will be seen traveling along Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando this Saturday. The fruits and veggies will adorn seven floats in the inaugural Fresh From Florida Parade, replacing the Orlando Citrus Parade with a rolling salad bar's worth of produce.
Hundreds of volunteers from across Central Florida have been at the Orange County Convention Center, decorating the floats with all types of Florida-grown products.
Steve Hogan of Florida Citrus Sports, organizer of the 32nd annual parade says that ehen it comes to the floats, citrus is still king. Adding veggies, including squash and corn, does allow for more creative and vibrant designs.
"You can really make some spectacular floats," Hogan said. "For us, it was a lot of fun."
The move to add a wider variety of Florida produce was a financial one. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services paid $325,000 for a yearlong sponsorship that includes the parade as well as other events during Orlando Bowl Week.
